Accessibility

Cape May Stage is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all, both on and off the stage. As an equal opportunity employer, Cape May Stage is committed to identifying and hiring the most qualified individuals for each position, without regard to disability, cultural background, or any other characteristic protected by law. This commitment extends to creating opportunities for individuals to thrive as employees, volunteers, and production assistants within our organization.

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards of 1991 and 2010, Cape May Stage ensures that individuals with disabilities have equal access to participate fully in all aspects of our operations. This includes access to theatrical performances as members of the audience, as well as opportunities to contribute creatively and professionally behind the scenes.

The organization recognizes the unique historical nature of its venue, the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, which is leased space listed on the National Historic Register. While this designation imposes certain structural limitations, Cape May Stage remains committed to meeting ADA standards to the fullest extent possible. Reasonable accommodations are made to ensure accessibility and inclusivity, and we continuously assess and improve our facilities and practices to address the needs of individuals with disabilities.

This policy reflects Cape May Stage’s values of equality, diversity, and inclusion. It underscores our belief that the arts should be accessible to everyone, fostering a community where all voices are heard and celebrated.

Cape May Stage is committed to accessibility to all of our patrons. If you require assistance, please call 609-770-8311 in advance of the performance you will attend so we can accommodate you.

Below you will find a list of accessibility services we currently offer for our patrons.

Accessibility Ramp

Barrier Free Access

Cape May Stage offers barrier-free access for our patrons using canes, walkers, scooters, or wheelchairs with a handicap accessible ramp leading up to the front door of the theater. If you have difficulty navigating stairs, please enter the theater from the parking lot on the right side of the building where you will find our ramp.

Handicapped Reserved Seating

Wheelchair Accessible Seating

Cape May Stage offers wheelchair accessible seating in the front row of the theater. If you require these seats, please call our box office team before your arrival at 609-770-8311 to make the necessary arrangements.

American Sign Language Performances

As part of our commitment to inclusivity and an ongoing effort to make theater
accessible to all, Cape May Stage is proud to offer Sign Language (ASL) interpreted performances for all of our main stage plays.

To find dates of upcoming ASL interpreted shows, please view our current season schedule.

Assistive Listening Systems Available

Assistive Listening Devices

Cape May Stage offers complimentary assistive listening devices (ALDs) for our patrons to use. If you’d like to try one out, just ask the box office associate when you arrive at a show and they will give you one to use. We also provide disposable headphones for free, or you can “BYO” headphones to plug into the device. Any standard wired headphones will work; but wireless bluetooth headphones will not.

These ALDs will automatically amplify the sound from the stage and help you to hear every word. By eliminating much of the ambient noise and focusing the sound directly to your ears, ALDs can provide a major boost in the audio quality for any show.
